Project study: Green AI
Make the carbon footprint of corporate AI use measurable and market-ready as a team. A TUM project study within ecoverity Venturing, supervised by the Center for Energy Markets (CEM).
AS PART OF
TUM Project Studies
- Project Studies are team projects in which students of the TUM School of Management work with a company and a supervising chair.
- A team of 2 to 5 students works on a real question for 3 months full-time or 6 months part-time.
- The process follows the TUM format: kick-off, mid-term meeting, final presentation and written report.
SUPERVISING INSTITUTE
Supervision confirmedCenter for Energy Markets (CEM)
- The Center for Energy Markets at TUM School of Management has accepted the project study and supervises teams of 3 to 5 students.
- The CEM publishes the project study on its website. We communicate it here and on LinkedIn at the same time.
- At the CEM, the topic meets in-house research on the energy demand of AI and digital applications.
What it’s about
Companies can measure their corporate carbon footprint fairly well today. What they cannot measure is the footprint of their AI use. Two companies may report the same emissions while one runs most of its processes on AI models. Green AI is still largely a research topic with few dedicated papers. ecoverity aims to turn this research into a market-ready service by building strategic partnerships and positioning it for regulators.
The project framework is only a possible proposal and can always be adapted and refined by the students. We look forward to your suggestions and pitches!
Tasks and outcomes
- Review the current research and regulatory landscape around the footprint of AI use.
- Propose methods to measure corporate AI emissions.
- Develop strategies for market and public communication.
- Plan pilot projects or strategic partnerships.
You start with a structured literature review. Depending on your approach, this can draw on life cycle assessment (LCA), activity-based carbon accounting, scenario and sensitivity analyses or your own energy measurements. We provide access to ecoinvent.
Three outputs mark the end of the project:
- A go-to-market strategy report.
- A regulatory positioning statement for policymakers.
- Where possible, a draft for an academic publication.
Profile
- Team of 3 to 5 students, mixing business, technology and sustainability.
- Interest in working at the edge of research and market.
- Able to read papers and turn them into something usable.
- Structured, self-directed way of working.
- Fluent English, German is a plus.
What you gain
- Shape a topic that has no established market yet.
- Access to our LCA expertise, tooling and network of manufacturers.
- Results that feed into ecoverity’s strategy, with the option to keep building the venture with us.
- A working student position or long-term role after the project.
