CORE SERVICE ENVIRONMENTAL PRODUCT DECLARATION

A verified EPD for your bespoke construction product

We support manufacturers of bespoke construction products in producing standards-compliant EPDs, from data review through to publication. Turnaround is around 1 to 2 weeks, including for complex fire protection systems, specialist insulation, building services components and joint elements.

What an EPD is, and why it matters right now

A construction product is no longer judged only on what it does technically. More and more often it also matters which environmental impacts it causes. Which raw materials are in it? How much energy does manufacturing take? Which emissions arise during transport, installation, use or at end of life?

That is what the Environmental Product Declaration, or EPD, is for. It works as a standardised environmental profile for construction products. It documents a product's environmental impacts so they can be followed, not as a marketing claim but according to fixed rules, with a clear method and independent review.

The basis for it is a life cycle assessment, or LCA, which calculates the environmental impacts along the product's life. The EPD then translates that calculation into a document the construction sector recognises. Where the LCA supplies the technical calculation, the EPD makes the results comparable, reviewable and usable, for tenders, building certification, planning decisions or sustainability reports.

For construction products an EPD follows the standard EN 15804+A2. It sets out which environmental indicators have to be reported, how the life cycle is divided up and in what form the results are documented. That lets planners, building owners and clients interpret product data and reuse it in building-level life cycle assessments.

Right now the EPD is becoming especially important. New regulatory requirements, growing ESG reporting obligations and the coming EU Construction Products Regulation are turning dependable product data into a condition for putting products on the market at all. Public sector clients, lead planners and large contractors already ask for this data today. Without an EPD you risk being scored lower in tenders, or not being considered at all, however convincing the product is technically.

It gets genuinely demanding with bespoke and complex construction products. A simple product can often still be represented with standard data. Multi-layer or multi-component products are a different matter: passive fire protection systems, combined insulation and acoustic assemblies, building services components or joint and connection products often combine several materials, variants and processing steps. Rigid templates are not enough here.

That is exactly where ecoverity comes in. We build the data basis properly, model bespoke products so the reasoning can be followed and turn the results into a standards-compliant EPD. What you get is not just a compliance document but dependable evidence you can use in tenders, customer conversations and future follow-on projects.

Your EPD project in 8 steps

The route to a verified Environmental Product Declaration

  1. Kick-off

We start with a shared project setup: which products are to be declared, which variants belong to them and which dates matter? We also establish which programme operator fits and which product category rules apply.

    Duration
    About 1 day
    Responsible
    ecoverity + manufacturer
  2. Data review

We check your existing product data for completeness and EPD suitability. That covers material data, supplier data, energy consumption, production waste and packaging. We flag missing or uncertain data early, so the rest of the process stays plannable.

    Duration
    About 1 day
    Responsible
    ecoverity
  3. Modelling

We build the life cycle model of your construction product so it can be followed step by step. For multi-component products we model material logic, layer structure, production steps and variants in a structured way, so the calculation stays reviewable and updatable later.

    Duration
    About 2 to 3 days
    Responsible
    ecoverity
  4. Calculation

We calculate the environmental impacts according to the requirements of EN 15804+A2, evaluating the relevant life cycle modules. The results show which materials and process steps shape the environmental impact most.

    Duration
    About 1 day
    Responsible
    ecoverity
  5. Report & verification setup

We turn the calculation into a draft EPD following the rules of the programme operator. Alongside it we prepare the background documentation for review, setting out data sources, assumptions, modelling steps and calculation logic so they can be followed.

    Duration
    About 2 to 3 days
    Responsible
    ecoverity
  6. External verification

We accompany the review process with the independent verifier. We answer queries, supply methodological explanations and adjust documents if rework becomes necessary during the review. That rework is included in the agreed project scope.

    Duration
    Depends on the programme operator
    Responsible
    Programme holder, accompanied by ecoverity
  7. Publication

After successful verification we prepare the EPD for publication and support the upload into the relevant programme databases. Depending on the programme operator that can include ILCD or other machine-readable EPD data sets.

    Duration
    About 1 to 2 days
    Responsible
    ecoverity
  8. Maintenance & updates

An EPD is normally valid for five years. We keep an eye on deadlines, the state of the data and any need for change. If queries, smaller pieces of rework or methodological additions to the existing EPD come up, we handle them with you. If the product, formulation, suppliers or production data change substantially, we update the existing data basis through a targeted follow-on assignment.

Common questions about EPD

How long does it take to produce an EPD?
With us an EPD normally takes about 1 to 2 weeks from data release. That assumes the relevant product data is complete: bills of materials, energy consumption, supplier data, packaging and production information. Where it is not, we support data collection during a factory visit. We agree the exact sequence and project duration with you bindingly at the kick-off.
What does an EPD cost?
The price depends mainly on product complexity, data availability and the chosen programme operator. An EPD for a clearly bounded single product costs less than a product family EPD covering several variants, layer structures or production sites. We are happy to send you our price list on request. After a first data review we can set the scope more precisely and prepare an individual, non-binding quote.
Can several product variants be covered in one EPD?
Yes. Several variants can be combined in a product family EPD where it makes methodological sense to represent them together. This matters particularly for construction products with a similar structure but different thicknesses, formats, formulation shares or performance classes. We check at the start whether a family EPD is possible or whether separate EPDs make more sense. The aim is a solution that stays methodologically sound while reducing the maintenance effort.
Who verifies the EPD?
Verification is carried out by an independent, accredited third party. We prepare the EPD documents and the background documentation and handle the queries during the review, but the verification itself is external. Typical programme operators in the construction products sector are the following. First, IBU (Institut Bauen und Umwelt), an established German programme operator for EPDs. IBU reviews and publishes EPDs with independent third-party verification and has a particularly strong position in the German construction products market. Second, Kiwa-Ecobility Experts, an international EPD programme operator within the Kiwa group. Kiwa offers EPD programmes and verification for construction products and is also active in the context of the Construction Products Regulation. Third, ift Rosenheim, a programme operator with a strong focus on windows, doors, facades and building elements. Published EPDs list ift Rosenheim as the programme operator, while older declaration codes use the abbreviation AFT among others.
What makes an ecoverity EPD different from other providers?
An ecoverity EPD combines rigorous modelling with a lean, digital project process. We do not work from rigid templates. Instead we structure your product data so that complex construction products, variants, layer structures and special cases can all be represented cleanly. That relies on internal automation, standardised data logic and close coordination with your team. The process stays efficient and easy to follow, with a person to talk to throughout.
How long is an EPD valid?
An EPD to EN 15804+A2 is normally valid for five years. We handle the update through our EPD updates service and come back to you in good time before it expires. If the product, formulation, suppliers or production data change substantially, an update can be sensible or necessary before the five years are up. The existing data basis does not have to be rebuilt for that, it can be updated selectively.

Start with a realistic assessment.

We work out with you which product data you have, which is missing and whether an EPD is achievable at short notice. In person and without obligation.
